We can build it! Brick by Brick!Kenya Diaspora official pitches for a Kenya Centre in the US

The original Diaspora was that of the Jews in Babylon. This was a well-educated, high-echelon diaspora that had been taken from the elite of the Jewish nation. While in exile, they organized, governed themselves and thrived. They were not just weeping aimlessly by the rivers of Babylon; they gathered the power of their numbers and built their anchors in a foreign land, brick by brick.

The Kenyan diaspora isn’t too different from this very first Diaspora in Babylon. We too have it in us to thrive in a foreign land. We can build a footprint that will anchor our national identity, project our unity, and feed our hopes. Above all, it should be practical, providing jobs, space to showcase the best of our arts and culture, facilities to conference and generating resources. A Kenya Center, somewhere in the US Capital. Spectacular, inspiring, welcoming, affirming. A symbol of Us. We can build it, brick by brick.

*Mkawasi Mcharo Hall first pitched the vision for a Kenya Center at the 2006 KCA Conference, then at the 2011 Diaspora Conference
