Voter Registration Hits Snag

Voter Centres run out of material on Day One.

The much awaited voter registration by IEBC ended prematurely in Naivasha constituency after materials used for the exercise ran out.

Barely two hours after commencement, the exercise had to be stopped when it emerged that the materials used for registration was insufficient.

Investigations established that in nearly all the 95 registration centers, majority did not have the materials.  The move caused anxiety in the constituency with IEBC officers rushing to Nakuru to collect more material.

One visibly distraught voter Erikana Munyi, told KLN that he had visited several registration centers only to find the clerks just sitting there idle. “We are worried by what is going on as this is the first day and the exercise has come to an end because of lack of material,” he said.

His sentiments were echoed by Ann Wambui who wondered if the electoral body was ready for the exercise.  “Many of those seeking registration have been turned away and we call on IEBC to assure us that all is well,” she said.

Naivasha IEBC constituency coordinator Mildred Wachiye confirmed the problem noting that it was been addressed.

According to her they had not anticipated a high turn out a move she attributed for the materials running out.

“Its true registration materials have run out but we have collected more and we expect the exercise to continue without hitch,” she said.

Wachiye called for patience terming the issue as a small hitch which would be fully addressed.

On the fate of inmates registering for the elections, the officer noted that they were yet to get direction from the national offices.

“We have not received any communication on the issue of prisoners but we have received 85 BVR kits out of the 95 needed in this constituency,” she said.

KLN London adds that there has been no clear verdict on the start of the Diaspora registration, word doing the rounds here is that the onus still lies with the IEBC to make the announcement as tow when the exercise will kick off in the UK, the US and elsewhere.
