President Kenyatta pays tribute to Fidel Odinga as he joins ,Hon Raila, family in an emotional send off

Nairobi – Fidel Odinga has been given a heroes send off in an emotional church service at the All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi.

The Mass held Thursday was the final one to be held in Nairobi for the exuberant first son to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga who died Sunday at his Karen home under unclear circumstances.

There were thousands of attendants, from all walks of life, including president Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto, as well as other political leaders, members of the civil society and businessmen, as well as family members, friends and normal members of the public.

They were all here, affiliations aside to pay tribute to the life of a talented young man who had passed on in his prime.

The late Fidel’s father Raila was full of praise for his late son.

” He was a man when he was a boy and he learnt alot even when I was not there and was always dependable. I will miss him, hew said.

The late Fidel’s mum Ida Odinga explained why his loss was such a big deterrent to the family.

” The happiest day of my life was the day I gave birth to Fidel,” she said. ” The father wanted to make Fidel an Engineer, at 3 years old, he bought him three boxes of toys, she said of his childhood.

She had more to say about the older Fidel, one she described as responsible but edgy.

” At 18, Fidel said he wanted to go a night club and I told him buy your own Soda and respect girls because they are not toys, she remembered.

” He was a big Gor Mahia fan so wherever there was a game I was worried because he had to go, she remembered of her son.

The wife of the late Fidel Lwam was too emotional to speak but was helped out by a friend, in what was an emotional time for all during the service.

” My love, my husband. Love where do we even begin. You defied all preconceptions, you made me laugh without reason. I know you are gone, but the living God who gave me to you will take care of us,” she said.

Fidel’s younger brother Raila Junior gave a touching tribute to his elder brother.

” Fidel was more than a brother to us. He was a leader and a disciplinarian. He never hid anywhere, he was ready to take on any challenge for our sake.

” We will always love him and we miss him badly, he said.

President Kenyatta also spoke about a plan to meet Fidel hatched in December, but one which never took place.

“As we share today as a nation united by grief, there is a lot we can learn. He called me in December and asked that we meet. Sadly, it was not to be. We stand with the family and especially his wife Lwam. We want to tell you that we are together and we are your big brothers here. Do not be afraid to call us and we will sit down and talk,” he said.

The late Fidel will be buried Saturday at his father’s farm in Bondo.
