Yesterday, Health Chief Administrative Secretary Mwangangi announced eight newly confirmed cases of the coronavirus, increasing the country’s total to 216. Five of the new patients are Kenyans and three are foreigners. Six of the cases were reported in Nairobi, one in Siaya and the other in Nakuru.

Dr Mwangangi also announced one additional recovery, bringing the total to 41.

Kenya has tested 8,827 people for Covid-19.

CAS Mwangangi said 12,000 testing kits will be distributed across the country for mass testing.

The Health ministry will start mass testing for Covid-19 at the Kenya Ports Authority, where seven employees have contracted the disease and two have died.

Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has said people will now be arrested for not wearing masks in public.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has obtained a court order to detain Fr Richard Oduor for two days for further investigation into the accusation that he knowingly spread the coronavirus.

Five Kenyans have died of the coronavirus in the United States in the past month and hundreds others are stuck in various countries that have imposed lockdowns, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Macharia Kamau has said.

Elsewhere in Africa, Somalia has registered a spike in confirmed Covid-19 cases after 35 people tested positive.

Tanzania extended the closure of schools for an indefinite period after the number of Covid-19 cases rose to 53.

Uganda, which has 55 confirmed cases, has extended its lockdown for another 21 days.

Outside Africa, the United States has recorded 2,228 deaths related to the coronavirus pandemic over 24 hours, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. The outbreak has now claimed the lives of at least 25,757 people in the US, the most of any country.

American President Donald Trump has cut off funding to the World Health Organization, accusing the United Nations body of mishandling the coronavirus crisis as governments grapple with how and when to get their struggling economies back to work.

India’s nationwide coronavirus lockdown, the biggest in the world, covering 1.3 billion people, will be extended until May 3, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said.
