Kenya’s WTO Candidate is Hon. Amina Mohamed

Kenya has nominated Hon. Amina Mohamed for the WTO’s DG position. This nomination brings the number of Africa candidates to 3 . The list includes Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo Iweala  and another from Egypt.

Africa has a good claim, never having had a DG. But it has yet to coalesce around a single nominee.

Since the world trading system is dominated by mutual suspicion between the US and China, the new DG can’t be from either of those, or a WTO member too close or too hostile to either. A European DG isn’t impossible, given the EU’s attempts to position itself at arms-length to both combatants, but it’s hard to think of one trusted in Washington.

An African would make sense from that point of view, then. They wouldn’t be able to deliver either Washington or Beijing for any proposal about the future of the WTO, but they wouldn’t be instantly rejected as biased.

In any case, if you hear someone say that the DG definitely has to be a candidate from X country for Y reason, just recall what Leo from the Scorpions gang says in Grease. The rules are there ain’t no rules.
