Kenya tops EA bloc in impact investments

Kenya had impact investments worth $4.2 billion (Sh. 420 billion), 46% of all such investments in the region, between 1998 and 2004. A total $9.3 billion (Sh. 930 billion) worth of impact investments were made in the period. This is according to a newly released report by the UK Department of International Development (DfID), Open Capital Advisors and the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN). Uganda and Tanzania accounted for 13 and 12 per cent of the funds invested or $1.2 billion and $1.1 billion respectively while Ethiopia received seven per cent or $651 million and Rwanda got four per cent or $372 million. Of the total Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) accounted for $3.6 billion through 136 deals while Private Equity and Venture Capital firms invested $650 million in 221 deals over the period under review.
