Jonathan Pitroipa given reprieve ahead of clash against Nigeria on Sunday

Expelled striker Jonathan Pitroipa, will be able to play for the Stallions in the final against Nigeria’s Super eagles on Sunday following the success of an appeal lodged with the CAF disciplinary Committee who found Tunisian referee Slim Jdidi erred, in sending him off.

During its meeting held on February 08th 2013 in Johannesburg, the Orange AFCON 2013 Organising Committee examined the protest made by the Football Association of Burkina Faso concerning the sanction imposed upon the player no. 11 Jonathan Pitroipa, during the match no.30 opposing Burkina Faso to Ghana played in Mbombela on February 06 the 2013.

The Committee decided to submit the case to the CAF Disciplinary Board.

The CAF Disciplinary Board, having met this day:

– following the examination of the protest letter from the Football Association of Burkina Faso,

– following the examination of the referee’s report as well as his additional report in which M. Slim Jdidi recognizes having made a mistake by giving a 2nd yellow card to player no 11 of Burkina Faso

– following the receipt of the recommendation of the CAF Refereeing Committee advising the cancelation of the 2nd yellow card imposed upon Jonathan Pitroipa

The Disciplinary Board decided to validate the recommendation of the CAF Refereeing Committee and to cancel the 2nd yellow card given to player no.11 of Burkina Faso.

This decision is taken, fundamentally, in conformity with the dispositions of article 11 of CAF Disciplinary Code which stipulate

« Article 11 – Specific Jurisdiction

The Disciplinary Board is responsible for:

sanctioning infringements which may or may not have escaped the match officials’ attention;

sanctioning all offences which occur prior to, during, or after a fixture;

rectifying obvious errorsin disciplinary decisions based on referees’ reports;

extending the duration of suspensions incurred automatically by an expulsion;

pronouncing additional sanctions to those imposed by the referee, such as a fine.

Sanctions may be taken after viewing a recording of the match”.

Consequently, player no.11 Jonathan Pitroipa of Burkina Faso is eligible for the final of the 29th Orange Africa Cup of Nations, South Africa 2013.
