Brazil Stopped as Germany Flops

It was another day of surprises at the FIFA Russia 2018 world cup, with unexpected results from the giants of soccer (topi Lyambila writes).

Mexico put on a sterling performance in Moscow’s Luzhniki stadium to hang on to a 35th minute lead against defending World Champions Germany in a game that could have well heralded a final place finisher. Despite displaying superior ball possession, the Germans could not break down the Mexican defense buoyed by an alert midfield and swift forward line whose counter attacks were unnerving for the German defense.

As if to sustain an air of defiance, Switzerland, who are rank outsiders came from behind to hold 5-time world champions Brazil and pre-match favourites Brazil to humble but astounding 1-1 draw in the Rostov-on-Don stadium.

Earlier on in another group E encounter Serbia squeezed a well-deserved 1-0 victory over Costa Rica.

Monday will see the long awaited England starter against Tunisia in the Volgograd stadium in a group G game. This will come after another Group G game in Sochi between new comers Panama and Belgium.

The first game of the day will be a group F duel pitting Sweden vs South Korea at the Nizhny Novgorod stadium.
