Brazil 2014 The Extravaganza

The glorious 1990 Cameroon's Indomitable Lions - Can an African team repeat that feat?

(by topi Lyambila)It is now just days to the World Cup master piece, and with team squads being named it is beginning to take shape and sound real.

The hosts Brazil send out its line-up first showing the confidence that goes with being 5-time winners.  Brazil has left out popular names Kaka and Robinho, sending out a message that they have what it takes and more.

Big runners Germany are banking on Miroslav Klose to do the bidding, but Africa’s Big Five  who have yet to name a squad want to correct the mistake of South Africa 2010.

Cameroon the perennial African big name but with little to show over the past few years are in Group A with hosts Brazil, Croatia and Mexico all of them big names on the soccer field.  Group is one of the most entertaining (on paper) for the initial stages.

Brazil is bringing it on their wonder boy Neymar must deliver.

Also on the honours list for round one is Group D, which is also seen on paper as the Group of death although I can only see the deathbed of one much reputed but no-bite England.  Uruquay, Costa Rica and Italy are no push overs and am giving them the edge over England, who might just pack their bags earlier than ever.

Nigeria the Super Eagles Africa’s other stalwarts are in Group F with Argentina, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iran- not much of the hurdle if they keep their heads, second round is beckoning.

Ghana – the team that has my backing this early to go furthest is in what can also be deemed a group of death  with tough-ends in Germany and Portugal, not to belittle the USA who have shown in the recent past that they are equally a force to reckon with Internationally.

Roger milla is mobbed by his teammates in Italia 90. Can Africans hope for similar scenes?

Ivory Coast with an unsure squad are up against Colombia, Greece and Japan, all very unpredictable teams that could cause trouble for the West africans.  Then there is Algeria in Group H against lukewarm sides in Belgium,. Russia and South Korea.

World Champions Spain are in Group B  with Netherlands, Chile and Australia in a not so sharp grouping.

Group A and Group G are the groups to watch if you want class and entertainment, I am almost certain the 2014 Champions will emerge from one of these two groups …watch this space for more specific analysis.
